Got Questions About Moisturiser?
Our experts have the answer
Sunscreen or Moisturiser First?
Sunscreen should always be applied last, after your moisturiser, to ensure it forms a protective layer on your skin. The general rule is to apply products from thinnest to thickest texture. Here's why:
- Moisturiser: Hydrates and locks moisture into your skin, prepping it for the sunscreen layer.
- Sunscreen: Creates a physical or chemical barrier that protects your skin from harmful UV rays. If you apply sunscreen first, the moisturiser might dilute or affect its effectiveness.
Tip: Let your moisturiser absorb into your skin for about 1-2 minutes before applying sunscreen for the best results.
Serum Before or After Moisturiser?
Serums should be applied before moisturiser. Serums are lightweight, concentrated formulas designed to target specific skin concerns like fine lines, pigmentation, or dehydration. They contain active ingredients such as peptides, antioxidants, or hyaluronic acid that can penetrate deeper into the skin.
- Apply serum to clean, slightly damp skin, as this helps it absorb better.
- Follow with facial moisturiser to lock in the serum's active ingredients and provide hydration, helping to seal it all in.
Tip: If you use multiple serums, start with the thinnest (typically water-based) and work your way up to thicker, oil-based serums for optimal absorption.
Does Moisturiser Expire?
Yes, moisturisers do expire. Most skincare products have a shelf life of 1-3 years, depending on the ingredients and packaging. After opening, moisturisers generally last about 6-12 months. You can check for:
- Expiry Date: Most products will have an expiration date, but also look for how long the product is good for after opening (often marked as "12M" or "6M" for 12 months or 6 months).
- Signs of Expiry: Changes in colour, texture, or smell can indicate that the product has gone off. If the product starts to separate or feels less effective, it may no longer be safe or beneficial to use.
Tip: To extend the life of your moisturiser, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and always make sure the lid is tightly closed.
